Grocery shopping on a budget can be pretty difficult these days, with many food items getting more pricey. While some essentials are worth the splurge, many common items have become unnecessarily costly, offering less value for your money. Many people have found themselves reconsidering buying various food and drink items that have become too expensive to help stretch their budget further. Here are 18 grocery items that are now overpriced and would most likely be a waste of your hard-earned cash.

Berries

Time Magazine reported in 2023 that “nearly every fruit costs more than it did last year [and] a pint of fresh strawberries is up more than 25% since November 2021.” This increase in the price of strawberries and other berries has unfortunately made them more of a luxury than a staple. There’s also always a possibility that the money you spend on berries may end up being wasted, as they can spoil quickly before you have the chance to eat them.

Salmon

The high demand for salmon has led to overfishing, which, combined with environmental concerns and general inflation, has caused the prices of salmon to rise significantly. In comparison to farmed salmon which may have a lower nutritional value, wild-caught salmon is much more expensive. If you don’t want to waste your money, there are many cheaper fish options you can buy like mackerel and sardines that provide similar health benefits.

Free-Range Eggs

Many of us like to choose free-range eggs over conventional eggs for ethical or nutritional reasons. However, free-range eggs can cost double or even triple the price of regular eggs these days! Despite this extra expense, the nutritional difference between free-range eggs and other eggs has actually been found to be pretty minimal. So are they really worth the hefty price tag? Maybe it’s time to consider cheaper egg substitutes for baking and cooking to save money.

Avocados

The complex production process and high demand for Greek yogurt make it cost more, and popular brands of Greek yogurt can be significantly more expensive than regular yogurt. Choosing another yogurt option or making Greek yogurt at home can be both cheaper and healthier, as many flavored Greek yogurts also contain high levels of added sugars.

Organic Kale

According to The New York Times, “in 2022, organics accounted for 15 percent of all fruit and vegetable sales in the United States despite being far pricier than conventional produce.” Organic kale is often twice the price of conventional kale, and it doesn’t provide much extra nutritional value, so maybe it’s time we stop buying organic regardless of the price. Also, consider more affordable leafy greens like spinach or Swiss chard for similar benefits.

Cold-Pressed Juices

Cold-pressed juices are among some of the most expensive drinks at the grocery store. However, they can be a bit of a waste of money! They’re much less healthy than they’re marketed to be, as they contain high levels of natural sugars. As well as this, you have to pay extra solely for labor and the process of cold-pressing. Making juices at home can be more cost-effective and allows you to control the ingredients.

Matcha

Matcha is another trend that has caught on with many people. However, authentic matcha is imported and therefore comes with a steep price tag. To prepare matcha properly, you also need a bunch of specific tools that can hike up the overall cost of drinking matcha. If you don’t drink it regularly enough that you make all of these purchases worth it, it can be a lot of money down the drain!

Almonds

The price of almonds has surged in the U.S. due to high demand and a lack of water in California where they are typically sourced from. Almond farming requires a lot of water, so there are also many concerns about the sustainability and environmental impact of almonds. Almonds have a lot of nutritional benefits, but there are other nuts like peanuts or sunflower seeds that provide similar nutrition for much less money.

Chia Seeds

In comparison to other seeds and grains, chia seeds are far more expensive! While these seeds are highly nutritious and offer various health benefits, they also contain a lot of calories, which means they may not be beneficial for some diets and the cost may not be justifiable. If you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle on a budget, there are other options like flax seeds that have just as many health benefits and are typically more affordable.

Coconut Oil

The newly gained popularity of coconut oil has driven up prices considerably, and since there are a variety of other healthy oils, like olive or canola oil, to choose from that won’t break the bank, there’s really no reason to stick to buying this expensive oil. The health benefits of coconut oil are also actually still debated among experts, so it could possibly be better for your health as well as your wallet to pick another option.

Grass-Fed Beef

The NPR says “about 75% to 80% of grass-fed beef sold in the U.S. is grown abroad, from Australia, New Zealand and parts of South America.” Transporting this meat contributes to its high cost and makes grass-fed beef much more expensive than grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef is also more difficult to find and less available, which can be an inconvenience. More affordable protein sources like chicken, pork, or grain-fed beef options might be the way forward.

Sourdough

Premium bakery products like sourdough can come at a much higher price than regular bread. While sourdough does have a distinct flavor and a variety of health benefits, it’s simply too expensive to justify buying it.
